Como House is a magnificent 19th-century mansion located in South Yarra, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Built in 1847 for Sir Edward Eyre Williams, the house stands as a testament to the elegance of Italianate architecture. Its name, “Como,” pays homage to the picturesque Lake Como in Italy, a source of inspiration for the original owners. The property is renowned not only for its grandeur but also for its beautifully landscaped gardens, designed by the eminent Edward La Trobe Bateman.
Over the years, Como House changed hands, with each owner leaving their mark on the property. Notably, Frederick Sargood, a prominent Melbourne merchant, made significant alterations and expansions to the house during his ownership. In 1959, Como House found a new purpose when it was acquired by the National Trust of Australia (Victoria). This non-profit organization has since worked tirelessly to preserve and maintain the historical integrity of Como House, ensuring that visitors can step back in time to experience the opulence and lifestyle of Melbourne’s elite in the 19th century.
Today, Como House serves as a museum and an emblematic venue for various events. The meticulously preserved interiors and beautifully tended gardens offer visitors a captivating glimpse into the past. It stands as a revered heritage site, listed on the Victorian Heritage Register, signifying its immense architectural and historical significance. Nestled in the affluent suburb of South Yarra, Como House remains a must-visit destination for those seeking to immerse themselves in the rich history and cultural tapestry of Victoria.
