I was researching locations for my next lot of travel adventures and came across a mention of the TV show Pie in the Sky.
I remember enjoying this light-hearted drama when it first aired back in the mid 1990s. Richard Griffiths played Detective Inspector Henry Crabbe in the five seasons of the show.
Henry is hoping to retire from the police force so that he can spend more time at his restaurant “Pie in the Sky”. Thoughtful and intelligent as a police detective, Henry is also passionate about food and cooking.
Not able to leave his police work behind, Henry is repeatedly called on to solve difficult cases when he would much rather be cooking. We meet a cast of characters from the worlds of both the restaurant and the police force.
Scenes featuring the exterior of the restaurant were filmed at 64 High Street, Hemel Hempstead. The building will be instantly familiar to anyone who watched the show.

Clicking on “view on google maps” will take you to street view, where you can select older versions and see how it’s changed over the years.
Scenes featuring the restaurant interior were filmed elsewhere, at Bray Studios in Berkshire.
Hemel Hempstead is 39 kilometres (24 miles) northwest of London. You can catch a train to Hemel Hempstead Station, and then take a bus another two miles north to the Old Town and the High Street.
Hemel Hempstead High Street is shown below. Pie in the Sky restaurant would be to the right of the red car in the centre of the image.
